Context
This song came to me when I listened to a fellow player describing how his fully grown Rex was taken down by a swarm of around 20 Trodons, the smallest playable dinosaur on The Isle. Like the Dillo, they have venom that they use to blind their victims but unlike the larger nighthunter, the Trodons do not create phantom hallucinations.
HUSH, LITTLE KING
Lyrics
[Intro]
UUUUUUAAAAAAA…
UUUUUUAAAAAAA…
[Verse 1]
Heavy feet on the valley floor,
The branches tremble at your roar.
Full-grown Rex, and the path is clear—
Everything smaller should flee in fear.
But down where the thorn and the brambles grow,
We crouch where your eyes never think to go.
A twitch of a fern. A flash of an eye.
Then somewhere below you, a rising cry.
[Pre-Chorus]
One from the hillside. Two by the stream.
A pause so quiet you hear yourself breathe.
You lower your head as the undergrowth stirs—
Then all through the valley, the answer returns.
[Chorus]
UUUUUUAAAAAAA—let the hollow ring!
UUUUUUAAAAAAA—hush, little king!
Little feet in the leaves, little teeth in your hide,
Gone through the thorns when your jaws swing wide.
Venom steals the daylight; the whole world goes black.
You turn toward a whoop—and a bite finds your back.
Hush, little king. Hear the leaves all around.
You can’t see the hunters. You know us by sound.
[Verse 2]
Your heel hits earth with a splintering crack;
A Troodon slips clear—and another comes back.
A sting at your ankle. A rush through the fern.
A call from behind you. Another sharp turn.
The green turns grey. Then the grey turns black.
You can’t find the clearing. You can’t find the track.
You stand with your back to the trunk of a tree
And snap at the places you think we might be.
[Bridge]
The sun still burns. The sky is blue.
The night has only come for you.
One by the roots. Two by the stone.
None of those voices is hunting alone.
You’re big enough to break us all—
Then why do you tremble at something so small?
[Breakdown]
UUUUUUAAAAAAA! —
Somewhere ahead.
You turn your head.
Behind you again.
You thought there were three…
Now you’re counting ten.
[Final Chorus]
UUUUUUAAAAAAA—let the hollow ring!
UUUUUUAAAAAAA—hush, little king!
Little feet in the leaves, little teeth in your hide,
You’ve flattened the thicket. There’s nowhere to hide.
You bite through the branches. You claw at the black.
The moment you stumble, the whole pack comes back.
Hush, little king. Let your crown touch the ground.
Even your roar can’t drown out that sound.
[Outro]
Small enough to miss.
Close enough to bite.
UUUUUUAAAAAAA…
