Context

Another song looking at the weird environments on The Isle. Sometimes a regular night turns extra dark. I personally do not know if that is a bug or a feature but even the nighthunters among the dinosaurs can then barely see past their own nose. The only thing still shining through the black is the glow of other dinosaurs’ eyes.

WHO TURNED THE MOON OFF?

Lyrics

[Verse 1]

There was silver on the river, there were stars above the trees,

There were footsteps in the bushes and a whisper on the breeze.

Then the treeline lost its edges, then the stars all slipped from view,

And a wall of tar came rolling where the moonlight filtered through.

Now I’m walking into branches, now I’m tripping over stone,

And I swear that something’s breathing—but it might just be my own.

Somewhere out there calls my buddy, “Keep on following my sound!”

Then a splash, a pause, a whisper:

“I appear to have run out of ground.”

[Pre-Chorus]

He’s a Dilo, born for midnight, he’s the hunter in the night—

But he’d trade a mouth of daggers for a little bit of sight!

[Chorus]

Who turned the moon off? Who swallowed the sky?

Is that my best friend, or am I about to die?

Nothing but black and a stare shining through—

I can’t see my nose, but I can see you!

Two eyes, four eyes, ten in a row,

Nobody moves till we know where to go!

Who turned the moon off? Give back the light—

We were doing just fine with a regular night!

[Verse 2]

There’s a pair down by the water, there’s another by my knee,

There’s a rather taller set that keeps on staring back at me.

Could be Galli, could be raptor, could be something twice my size—

I can’t tell a friend from dinner when we’re nothing more than eyes.

Then the Dilo starts insisting that he knows this forest well,

Till he meets a trunk headfirst and gives a very startled yell.

“That was planned,” he mutters softly. “I was checking out the bark.”

Such a comfort, mighty hunter.

Lead us safely through the dark.

[Pre-Chorus]

Now the terror of the twilight’s standing right beside his prey,

And they’re both politely waiting for the dark to go away.

[Bridge]

Something shifts beside my shoulder.

Something brushes past my thigh.

There’s another pair behind us.

There’s a pair too bloody high.

Keep your tail in. Keep your voice down.

Tell me that was someone’s sneeze.

If those eyes get any closer—

[Break]

…Oh.

There’s the trees.

[Verse 3]

No sunrise on the mountain, no slow and gentle change—

Just the ordinary moonlight.

Well, that was bloody strange.

There’s the river, there’s the hillside, there’s the path beneath the tree,

There’s the branch I called a raptor—

And a raptor next to me.

[Final Chorus]

Who turned the moon on? Who gave back the sky?

That’s an awful lot of teeth—good luck, my friends, goodbye!

Silver on the water, all the forest in view—

Now I see the teeth that belong to you!

Two eyes, four eyes, off we all go,

Back to the chase in the pale moon’s glow!

Who turned the moon on? Well, the world looks right—

Just the usual screaming on a regular night!
